Born and raised in Hokkaido of Japan, Yoshida studied kaisen ryori (seafood-focused dishes) at an early age and later ventured to Tokyo to further his knowledge of Japanese cuisine in the vibrant, competitive restaurant scene of 1970s Tokyo. Newfound relationships brought him to the US. First Minnesota, then Los Angeles, California, until he settled down in Houston, Texas after meeting his wife and opening Nippon in 1986.
